To mark the "World Disabled Day" on 3rd December, 2008 the Rotary Club of Kandy (District 3220) organized a Sports Festival for the differently abled at which over 200 children and adults participated at the Nittawela Grounds, Kandy.
All the participants are limb users provided by the Centre for Handicapped in Kandy which was born out of the Rotary as the catalyst in the formation of this centre with initial and continuing financial assistance provided by people of goodwill both within and without the Rotary Movement.
With events such as this Sports Festival these handicapped persons are made to feel that they are not outside the pale and that they could participate in events such as these like any other normal person. In fact, the performance of some of the participants could be the envy of those who are not handicapped.
This Sports Festival attracted several persons of goodwill who saw for themselves that these so called disabled people are not disabled but they are differently abled because quite often they make up for their disability with other skills and talents which are not available to others.
The enthusiasm and keenness displaced by the participants was an excellent example for the able body to follow. |
