Mr. M.L.A. KUDDUS

Mr. M.L.A. Kuddus is 68 years old and he is from Kandy. He has a one daughter and a son. His daughter is a Teacher and the Son is un- employed. He was a Vegetable Vendor.

This is his story which he related to us:-

“I got a wound on my left leg and was under medical treatment for nearly one month. But it did not get healed. After further tests I was informed that I’m suffering from Diabeties and that is the reason for the wound not getting healed. I was thereafter admitted to the Nawalapitiya General Hospital where they removed my first two toes of my leg. Then I came to a coma situation and was unconscious for 18 days. Thereafter they removed my leg below the knee. During the period I was hospitalized I came to know about the Centre for Handicapped.

After discharging my self from hospital I directly came to the Centre for Handicapped. The officials at the centre warmly welcomed me and after having explained my situation they agreed to fit an artificial limb. I was informed that there is a donor who has come forward to donate artificial limbs, and accordingly I was referred for measurements. Days later they fitted an artificial leg to me and trained me to walk.

Mr. M.L.A. Kuddus

I take this opportunity of conveying my sincere thanks to the staff at the Center for Handicapped for all the support extended during my stay. I am proud to announce that I am now able to walk as a normal person.

I am also very grateful to the generous donor who came forward to help me and give me a new life”

Mr. U. PREMATHILAKA

56 years old Mr. U. Premathilake is a farther of four children. His two sons are employed and others are still schooling. Before he lost his leg he was a driver. He is from Damana a rural village in the Ampara District.
This is his story which he related to us:-

“There was a wound on my right leg which I did not take much care of. Thereafter I suddenly got fever for which I was treated. But it did not get cured. Thereafter I was admitted to the Ampara General Hospital. After investigations were carried out I was informed that my wound had got infected. After that they transferred me to the Ratnapura General Hospital for further treatment. Although I was treated the wound did not get healed and finally I was informed that my leg has to be removed from below the knee. After removing the leg I was hospitalized for two months and went back home.

While I was at home a friend of mine visited me and he told that an artificial leg could be fitted from Centre for Handicapped in Kandy. I visited this Centre and I was indeed surprised when they informed me that there is a generous donor to sponsor my artificial leg. After that they assessed and made a leg for me. Then they trained me to walk. I felt very happy when I started to walk again.

I would like to thanks the generous donor who donated me an artificial limb and also the staff members of the Centre for Handicapped for their kind gesture.”

Baby Naduni Imalka

A cute kid was happily gazing at a group of children playing and running about, and enjoying themselves, but this little girl could not move herself.

She is Naduni Imalka Premathilaka who is now 4½ years old.  Her father is a Soldier and they live in Kahatagollawatta, a Village in the District of Gampaha.

This is the story which her mother related to us:

“My daughter was born without her legs. We just cannot believe how or why this happened to us. During the period of my pregnancy the baby was found to be normal according to the investigations carried out. When she was gradually growing up and able to understand she started asking me “Mother why am I not walking”? At that time I felt very sorry as I was not in a position to answer her question. At present she is attending the Nursery School. I am proud to say that although my little daughter has no legs, she seems to be very talented when compared with other children of the same age.

My daughter is now ready to start her schooling from next year and now she needs a pair of artificial legs. We requested for help through an advertisement that was published in the News Paper.  The officials at the Centre for Handicapped had seen this appeal and requested us to come to this centre as they were willing to help my little daughter by donating two artificial limbs. When we visited the Centre for Handicapped the authorities warmly welcomed us and referred my daughter for obtaining necessary measurements for the two artificial legs. Few days after they fitted two artificial legs to her and trained her to walk. Now my daughter is able to walk with the two elbow crutches.  We are very happy to see our daughter walking without our help which we cannot explain in words.  Naduni is also very happily moving about and enjoying herself.

I take this opportunity to thank the Government of Australia who generously donated these artificial limbs to my daughter and also the staff at Centre for Handicapped for their kindness and all the efforts taken by them to help my daughter to walk again”.
