MISS D. CHAMILA KUMARI
Ms. Chamilakumari of Usbima Programme, Nagamaduwa, Vanathavilluwara, Anamaduwa is a 19 year old girl who hails from a family of 5. She is the youngest in the family and has been successful in the G C E O/L Examination. Her parents are Estate Workers. The manner in which she lost her limbs is tragic in deed. This is her story.

"We reside in Line Rooms on the estate. My father used to spray insecticide to the Cadju Trees on the estate. One day he had kept the fluid in a tumbler on the table. It was white in colour and when I got into the room, I thought that it was milk and took a gulp. I realized with horror that it was an insecticide which was poison. I was warded in the hospital for a long time. Then I thought I was cured.

However after some time, numerous boils appeared on my foot and these turned into wounds. The Hospital Authorities were of the view that the bottom portion of my right leg and a portion of my left foot would have to be removed to prevent it from spreading further up my legs. There was no alternative, and the lower part of my right leg and a portion of my left foot were amputated.

I was very depressed and felt like committing suicide. What could I do without my legs. It was then that my parents heard about the Center for Handicapped. We inquired and found that they could provided me with an artificial leg as well as a portion for my left foot.

We were worried that we will not be able to pay for the artificial leg. The persons in charge of the center told us that they would try to find a kind and generous donor for me.

Miss D. Chamila Kumari
I was then informed that such a generous donor had been found. I do not even know his or her name to thank them for their generosity. I can now stand on my two legs and I hope very much to do a job and help my family who are extremely poor.

Someday, I want to save money and gift an amount to the Centre for Handicapped to enable someother poor person like me to have an artificial limb. This is the only way I can say thank you to the donor, whom I do not even know, who provided me with an artificial limb and a new chance in life.

MISS N. KOKILA

Kokila was a young girl as active as other children of her age. One day she was playing at school and had a fall. There was a small wound arising out of this fall which appeared to be cured. However, after a few days the leg began to swell and she was admitted to the General Hospital at Kandy . Kokila was becoming weak and deteriorating rapidly.

The hospital authorities told her father Mr. Namasivayam that some poisonous thorn or a snake had bitten her. As her condition was deteriorating it was felt that amputation of the leg was necessary to save her life. Kokila lost her left leg below the knee as a result of same.

Kokila's parents are not rich people. They could not find the money to pay for an artificial limb. However, they came to the Centre for Handicapped and appealed for help. The centre was able to find a donor to provide Kokila with an artificial limb which enables her to walk once more again. Kokila is very grateful to the donor even though she does not know who the donor is.

She is now in Grade 8 and good in her studies. She is determined to study well , get a job and help her family. She also has a desire to some day help another person who needs an artificial limb to have one. She says this is the only way I can say thank you to the kind donor who helped me to walk once again.

MISS MALINI PUWANALOJAN

Malini lost her limb when she accidentally trod on a pressure mine. She is from a very poor family. She lost her father when she was small and lives with her mother. She got married some time ago and has a son who is 5 years old. Her husband has left her and the son and as such they are finding it very difficult to survive.

Malini says that she could never have afforded the cost of an artificial limb given her circumstances. Therefore, she is extremely grateful to the kind donor who has contributed towards the cost of the artificial limb she has received. She hopes to try to find a job as she can now move about with the help of her new artificial limb and help her mother who is currently shouldering the responsibility of providing for the family.

MISS NADEEKA MADUSHANI
Nadeeka is the younger girl in her family. One day she was traveling by bus from school back home. At her destination she got down from the bus and crossed the street. She did not notice the vehicle coming from the other side. It was too late when she saw it. The vehicle banged on to her and dragged her down the road for quite a bit. That is all she could remember

When I recovered consciousness I realized that I was in hospital. My mother was standing by the side of my bed weeping. I felt severe pain in my right leg. It is only then that I realized that I had lost my leg and that it was amputated. Both my parents were terribly worried over my fate. My father had just undergone an operation. We are poor.

This tragedy disrupted my life and my schooling. I was depressed. It is then that my parents heard about the Centre for Handicapped. However, we did not have the money for an artificial limb. The authorities at the center told us that they will try to find a kind donor who will help me to walk again. They did this and through the generosity of a kind hearted person whose name I do not even know, I now walk once more again.

I can now go to school and can do most of the things I used to do before I lost my leg. It is my intention to study hard and get a good job, so that I can help my parents. I also want some day to help another person who has lost a leg to walk once again. It is the only way that I can say thank you to the person who helped me when I was in need.

MRS V SARASWATHY
Mrs. V Saraswathy is 42 years old and under the care of the Nuns at Daya Niwasa, Mulgampola Kandy. She is a native of Digana - a village in the outskirts of Kandy . Her family consisted of five Members. She married at the age of 18 and has two daughters. Her husband deserted her after the birth of her second daughter. She had no alternative but to work to support her family of two children and herself. She was working in a Lime Kiln at Digana. Her story is as follows.

"One day when I was working in the Lime Kiln, I wounded my foot. The wound did not heal and got worse. It was only then that I came to know that I am suffering from Diabetes. The Doctors informed me that they would have to amputate my left leg. Without a leg it was not possible to do any work and as I did not want to be a burden to my daughter with whom I was residing after she got married I moved to the Daya Niwasa Home at Mulgampola.

I have two brothers but they do not have any contact with me. I am told that they are abroad. They do not even know that I am an amputee.

t was at the Home that I learnt about the Center for Handicapped but I just did not have any money to pay for the cost of an artificial leg. The persons in-charge of the Center were very kind and informed me that they would try to locate a donor to pay for the cost of the limb. Recently, they contacted me and informed me that they had found a donor and asked me to come over. I do not even know the name of this kind and generous donor to thank him or her. I now have an artificial limb and am able to help with the work at Daya Niwasa which is a home for the destitute.

Mrs. V. Saraswathy
I work in the kitchen and attend to other minor work at the Center. The Nuns at Daya Niwasa are very kind to me. I am indeed very grateful to the generous donor and the Center for handicapped as I can now manage on my own with this artificial limb."
